Cookie Recipe

Many of you have been asking for the cookie recipe that I just posted....so here goes...

CRANBERRY NUT SWIRLS
These are a slightly fussy cookie....but are oh so good!
1/2 c softened butter
3/4 c sugar
1 egg
1 teas vanilla
1 1/2 c flour
1/4 teas baking powder
1/4 teas salt
Cream together butter, sugar, egg and vanilla until light and fluffy.
Combine the dry ingredients ( flour, salt and baking powder) and add to the creamed mixture.
Refrigerate for a least 1 hour.

1/2 cup finely ground cranberries
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
1 T grated orange peel
3 T brown sugar
2 T milk or orange juice ( I use orange juice)
Mix these ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside

On floured surface...roll out dough into a rectangle. Spread the cranberry mixture onto the
dough and roll up tightly. Wrap with wax paper and chill for several hours.
Cut into slices about 1/4" and bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 about 12 minutes.

Glaze

2 cups powdered sugar
2 T melted butter
2 to 3 T orange juice ( add enough so that glaze will drizzle over cookies)

Do not overbake . These cookies freeze well and taste even better after a day or two.

Baking Cookies

Cranberry Swirl Pinwheels

Today was a cookie baking day.
I made 2 batches of Cranberry Pinwheels and 2 batches of Peanut Blossoms.
For some reason my cookies never look pretty...but they do taste good!
For many years I would make dozens and dozens of different cookies for Christmas.
But....
Now I just make a few different kinds of cookies that are our favorites and everyone is happy!
A little more shopping to do tomorrow for Christmas and hopefully I will be done.

This is a very relaxing craft , is portable, and goes fast so that you can see results .
Our shop carry's patterns from designers Crane Design, Threads that Bind and Country Stitches.
We also carry a high quality Russian punchneedle, DMC, Valdani and Weeks floss for your projects.

Sharing Memories

It seems that Christmas always brings back childhood memories and I thought that I would share a picture of me and my siblings at a very young age. This picture shows only 5 of us, I also have a younger sister ( Cathy) and brother( Dave) that were not here yet when this picture was taken. I am on the top right next to my brother (chuck) who is close in age to me. In front is my sister (Donna) and brothers ( Bob & Jim). Take a look at those boys...you can see the mischief in their faces and boy did my Mother have her hands full. They are all great brothers each in there own way and I also have 2 of the most wonderful sisters that would do anything for me ( except cut fabric....Ha! Ha!)
This time of year also brings memories of my Mom ( whom I miss dearly). I always use her sugar cookie recipe and above you will see how well loved it is! I have re printed it on a nice recipe card, but cant part with the original copy. This notebook also has many recipes that I collected when I was newly married. I am sure that my sons will be excited when they learn that Mom left them recipes LOL! This recipe makes a lot of cookies.... MOM'S SUGAR COOKIES 1 C. SHORTENING 2 C. SUGAR 2 EGGS 1 C. SOUR MILK or BUTTERMILK 1 TEAS B SODA 1 TEAS B POWDER 1 TEAS VANILLA PINCH OF SALT AND NUTMEG Cream shortening, sugar and add eggs one at a time. Add sour milk & vanilla. Sift together flour, soda, powder, salt and nutmeg. Mix. Roll out and cut with cookie cutter. sprinkle with sugar and bake at 325 on greased cookie sheet until light brown. Do not overbake. Depending on oven your temperature and time may vary. Hope you enjoy!! Peg

What a gorgeous day today. I spent the afternoon cutting greens to decorate the porch for the holidays. We have several different pine trees on our property and I love to cut from a variety of them to use in planters and boxes and to put in the barrel by the shop sign. When the fresh cut wreaths are available I will decorate the windows and front door. Soon I will start decorating the shop for the Holiday Open House ... there is always so much to do, but it always seems to get done. Stop by for the Open House on November 24th ( Saturday) 10am - 4pm. Happy Stitching, Peg

Santa Claus Lane update

Got the borders on the quilt. I also had to change the trees on the right. I moved the tree with the light background above the tree with the dark background because I didnt like the light background next to the snow on the center block. Now, onto the longarm for quilting, then binding. Hope you like!!! Happy Stitching, Peg

Santa Claus Lane

This is a design from Jan Patek called " Santa Claus Lane" I am making this wall hanging using lite weight fusible so that I can get it done for the holidays. I do love needle turn applique, but do not have the time to devote to it...so fusible it is. Above is the center of the quilt and it is surrounded by other blocks of trees, stars, houses, etc.
This is the top row of " Santa claus Lane". I am working along on it....watch for more posts soon. Happy Stitching, Peg

FALL SMALLS DECORATING

Fall is such a great time of year and I love to decorate and create for this season. I always put lots of fall berries in wooden bowls and crocks, it just seems to give enough color and warmth to the decor. Above is a crosstitch piece that I just finished. I made a small wool pillow and attached the crosstitch to the front using a primitive stitch. Notice the strawberry along side of the pillow......I wanted to make it look fall-ish so I used an orange fabric with black dots and made the stem and leaves out of black wool. They are so darn cute that I have to make more!!
Another one of my crosstitch pillows sits in a wooden bowl with berries, a prim pumpkin and one of my Jo Morton little quilts ( its hard to see in this pic). Jo's fabrics play well with the colors of fall.
Above is a punchneedle that I designed and I am calling her "Wanda Witch". After much thought as what to do with her, and also wondering what to do with some bittersweet that I had, the ditty bag seemed like the perfect solution. So Sunday afternoon " Wanda Witch" ditty bag was created. The outer part of the bag is from a piece of wool from my stash, the lining is a primitve star fabric and the handle is a black ribbon. I think that I love this bag!
Another pic of fall decorations and "Miss Molly" in the window. Miss Molly does not like the camera as you can see....but she did pose for a second. This kitty has some attitude!

" Hallows Eve" revealed

Here is another quilt from the "Primitive Quilts" magazine called "hallows' Eve".The design is by Dawn Heese. My sample is a bit smaller than the original and I also eliminated the appliqued pieces. I wanted this to fit on a wall instead of my bed,so this just worked better for me. I am able to get 3 kits from the fabric that I have so anyone interested can contact me. The kits have enough fabric to make the original size of the quilt that is in the magazine. I love the colors in the quilt and it looks great hanging on the porch at the cabin. Now onto the next project............another from the Primitive Quilts magazine! This issue is just full of fun projects. Happy Stitching, Peg

SNEAK PEAK....

Here is a " sneak peak" at the latest project that I am working on... Here is a hint " Primitive Quilts & Projects" . Can you guess? The project is almost done, just have to sew the binding down and it will be hung at the shop. I will only be able to put together 3 kits because of shortage of fabric. Maybe I can find some other fabrics to substitute so I can make more kits.
I have been in a " FALL" kind of mood lately......maybe because this is what I am seeing in the yard at the Crow. The flowers are starting to wither away and the leaves are falling early because of the dry weather and then heavy rains. I am anxious to get some mums and pumpkins and to decorate outside. I just received an order of fall pumpkin candles and fall scented candles that will be put out at the Crow soon and I need to change the decorations inside also. The only thing missing is the smell of a fresh Apple Pie baking in the oven...yum..yum!!! Keep Stitching, Peg

Punchneedle "Happy Jack"

Punchneedle pumpkin "Happy Jack" is finished and sitting a top of a 6" round shaker box.I painted the top black, the bottom sides black striped and the inside bottom is done in a "BOO" scrapbook paper. Happy Jack was punched by me using 3 strand valdani threads. This little box would make a wonderful decoration for fall and/or halloween ...or put your favorite little scissors, buttons or trinkets inside. Box is for sale....to purchase contact me by e mail or phone. Price: $25.00

ROSY POSY PILLOW

The new book " A Day at Sunny Brook" by Maggie Bonanomi just arrived at the shop and I decided to make the wool applique" Rosy Posy "pillow. This is just one of the many great projects that are in the book and it gave me a reason to use some of our luscious wools. A quote from the book........... "Me thinks it is a token of healthy and gentile characteristics, when women of high thought and accomplishments love to sew, especially as they are never more at home with their own hearts than while so occupied" Nathaniel Hawthorne The Marble Fawn 1859

Punching Smalls

When the weather is hot and humid it is hard to do much that is physical...so this is when I usually sit on my side porch and do some stitching. Didnt know what I wanted to do , so I decided to sketch out some simple little punchneedle projects and do some punching. I also wanted to try some of the new Valdani and Weeks Dye Works threads to see how the colors worked up and I am pleased!!! I think that I will finish the 2 projects that you see and put them up for SALE. Now the decision is ....how do I finish them?? Maybe a little pillow or pincushion....how about a cute little bag or even mounted on a primitive shaker box. What do you think? Watch for the finished items soon! Happy Stitching , Peg

Bad Kitty!

Mia is at it again......she hears the sewing machine and thinks that Mommy needs her help. I am trying to put a jelly roll quilt together out of Modas Collection Friendship and SOMEONE keeps getting in the way of my progress. This kitty loves fabric and likes to let me know by posing for the cutest pictures, so I now keep a camera in my sewing room. The day that I rescued her from the feed store I knew she was special, she keeps us laughing and I think that she loves posing for the camera. Iam waiting for her to take her afternoon nap so I can get something done on the quilt. Looks like she is cozying up now for the afernoon..........gotta go!! Sewing to do! Happy Stitching, Peg

" Pioneer Woman"

I dont know if I have just been under a rock or what, but I just discovered the " Pioneer Woman" on the food network and I am addicted to the show!! I do occasionally watch the food network, but find that a lot of the recipes just do not fit in with my simple life. I am a simple " homestyle" kind of girl when it comes to my cooking. I think that it comes from my Mother who kept her food simple and delicious and also from my hubby and sons who like simple and complain when they can't figure out what is in the recipe!( to quote them.....what is this?) So now that I have discovered "Pioneer Woman" on the food network (she also has 2 books) that I will be purchasing,I will be setting aside Sunday mornings at 7 am to watch her show. I will set my alarm if I have to and have my morning cup of coffee in hand, cozy up on the sofa with my morning lap kitty Molly and we will watch "Pioneer Women". I wonder if I was a pioneer woman in a past life...OMG, I losing control! So, if you havent seen her program or purchased her books check it out. Let me know what you think or if you know about her already. Peg

Just Spoolin Around...

When I saw this quilt in the summer issue of "Primitive Quilts and Projects" magazine I knew that I had to make it! My sewing table was full of scraps and I could see all the great spools that they would make. The background is a primitive tea stained fabric that I have at the shop and I love using it. The applique pieces are wool that are hand stitched with pearl cotton and floss. The quilt in the magazine has a saying stitched around the spools, but I decided not to put it on mine. So get busy, rummage thru your fabric stash and make this whimsical quilt. Wouldn't it look great in your sewing room or draped over an old sewing machine!! AND....Dont forget that my quilt project " SWEET PICKINS" is coming out in the Fall issue of " Primitive Quilts & Projects" magazine. Happy Stitching, Peg

Happy Memorial Day! Finished stitching the binding on the runner that you see across the bench. Spent part of the day planting flowers, washing curtains and grilling food...it was a busy day! The quilt block that you see in the background is a block from a new project that I am working on...it should be done soon. It seems like I have been in a red, white and blue mood lately.
